Porsche 911 Engine Serial Number Decoder

broken image

911 Vin Number Makeup. Porsche used a variety of chassis and VIN numbering systems until 1981, when a major change was made to a 17 digit international code which remained current until the end of 911 production. All numbers for cars made between 1965 - 1990 are listed below this table. The case numbers end with 3R the other 7R do these numbers indicate what type of engines these would be? The other numbers on the cases are 911/02, and 911/96. The 911/02 number looks like it could be a 2.2 S engine, yes or no?The 911/96 number I haven't been able to find in any of the books I have.Any insight would be helpful. Thanks John Garrity.

Standard equipment build codes, option codes and Exclusive options

Please note: paint and interior color codes are not covered with this research work

Every Porsche leaves the factory with a list of standard and optional equipment. Standard equipment is described by build codes and optional equipment by option codes. The codes are three or four character strings of numbers and letters. Back in the old days, all the codes started with an M and they were called as the M-codes. Nowadays they start with an I. Please note that the sticker in the service book or on the body never includes all the codes related to the car. It is a bit of a mystery why some codes are printed there and some are not.

It is important to understand that the code descriptions depend on the model and the model year. If you see an option code list somewhere that doesn't tell for which model and model year it is, then it is not a quality source for decoding the codes of your Porsche.
